PROJECT DETAILS |
The three cell tower was originally designed as a wet/dry
cooling tower, with mechanically operated internal dampers to
reduce the plume.
Each cell was fitted with a 12’ wide x 30’ high
finned coil on one side of the tower and the opposite side
of the tower consisted of Vee bar with 16’ air travel.
The return water from the process was pumped through the finned
coil and then through the cross over pipe and into the hot
water basin.
With plume abatement no longer an issue the system was redesigned
by Colt Engineering to cool 13,500 USGPM from 95 to 80 @ 73
wet bulb, and the project consisted of the following modifications;
- All the finned coils were completely removed
- New 20’ diameter FRP fans were installed for maximum airflow
- New hot water basins and nozzles to match water flow
- New FRP louvers
- New hangers and Vee bar
- Structural repairs

PROJECT DETAILS |
The customer required an additional cooling tower be added
to the following design conditions:
Flow: 3,395 usgpm
Entering Water: 95.0°F
Leaving Water: 85.0°F
Wet Bulb: 76.0°F
Site Conditions:
Install new packaged steel or build additional cells onto the
existing cross flow induced draft wood tower.
The last photograph is standing on the existing fan deck
of the original tower looking at the new two cell addition.
We had reconstructed the original tower and added the new fibreglass
fan stacks in previous years. Note: New Hot water basin joins
to original hot water basin forming one complete tower.
The third photograph shows the existing tower and in the
background with the new safety railing are the new CTM cells
that were added to the existing. |

Design Conditions: 6,600 usgpm
Entering Water: 95ºF
Leaving Water: 85ºF

Site Conditions:
Because the system is heat recovery, the cooling tower operates all year long
therefore we were required to rebuild the system while the chilled water
plant continued to operate throughout the winter months.
The towers are located on the roof 35 stories above grade at the corner of
Yonge and Dundas Street. Crane lifts were unreasonable given the site conditions
and the height.
Photographs are of the first phase of the project. The first
shot shows the January 2004 completion of a section of the tower
while the dilapidated original section continues to operate.
The second shot is of the fibreglass casing and access door that
replaced the original MNA asbestos casing. Note the new fibreglass
fan stacks protruding from the top of the tower. |

CONOCO
PHILLIPS - TOWER COLLAPSE |

PROJECT DETAILS |
The 63,000 USGPM, 9 cell single flow cross flow tower located
in Burstal about 120 KM north of Medicine Hat in Alberta was
struck by a tornado in July of 2005 which resulted in the total
collapse of all 9 cells and the entire plant had to be shut down.
We visited the job site and with in days of the collapse we
were part of the team involved in supplying and setting up
over 30 portable rental cooling towers which were piped into
the existing sump, allowing the plant to be in operation within
6 weeks of the collapse.
The rental towers were in operation for approximately 2 months
while a new cooling tower was erected within the original concrete
basin.

TORONTO
STAR BUILDING - NEW TOWER REPLACEMENT |

PROJECT DETAILS |
The existing three cell Series 10 Marley Cooling Tower was
in poor condition and had to be replaced without interruption
to the operation of the plant,
This was achieved by keeping two cells in operation at all
times while each cell was completely removed and replaced.
In addition to the tower replacement, the concrete piers were
repaired and new hot dipped galvanized supporting steel was
replaced at the same time.
The new three cell Midwest Cross Flow Tower was designed to
cool 4000 USGPM from 100 to 85 @ 76 wet bulb temperature. |

PROJECT DETAILS |
This is a one of a kind natural draft cooling tower which
was built in 1974 and is located at INCO in Sudbury.
The scope of work involved the complete removal of the entire
asbestos cement casing panels, drift eliminators, heat transfer
surface and spray system.
These asbestos components were replaced with fiberglass casing,
high efficiency PVC eliminators, high efficiency cross fluted
PVC heat transfer media and Schedule 40 PVC spray system and
nozzles.
In addition to this there was significant degradation and
spalding of the concrete sump and supporting concrete columns
and beams.
The columns were cleaned up and fitted with Stainless forms
and filled with high strength fast drying specialty grout,
all concrete beams were replaced with Steel beams and the concrete
inlet louvers were replaced using marine grade pressure treated
plywood complete with a steel guard rail.
The bulk of the work as done during the summer shutdown in
2005 & 2006, however much of the upper level columns were
done over the winter with the tower online in conditions well
below -20 Celsius. |

Removed and replaced approximately 80% of all structural members,

2007 Plant Shutdown to the customers’ satisfaction.

Rebuild of # 7 Blast Furnace 4 Cell Series 15
Wood Cross Flow Cooling Tower.
Existing wooden fan stacks replaced with new fiberglass stacks
14’ diameter and 13’ 6” high connected to the
existing 50’ high steel stacks.
Existing steel fan assemblies replaced with new high efficiency
fiberglass fans and laser aligned and rusted out sprinkler system
replaced in places with new.
All louver columns and louvers replaced.
New fan deck, hot water basins installed along with some internal
structural repairs and new internal walkways complete with safety
rails
Site Conditions:
All work completed on schedule with no injuries during 21 day July
2007 Plant Shutdown to the customers’ satisfaction.

This new Ethanol plant built by North America Construction
Ltd in Aylmer Ontario. The 3 cell FRP Fiberglass tower designed
by Midwest Towers and erected by CTM from October 2007 to December
2007, overall project completion date is August 2008.
